What weird food did you eat as a kid?

I loved Olive Loaf. And fried bologna. And creamed chipped beef on toast. And and and...

a good olive burger is wonderful, we turn them into deluxe version by adding tomato and cheese, plenty of chopped onions, toasted bun (this is in addition to chopped lettuce, olives and plenty of mayo or Miracle Whip).

olive loaf would not be too hard to replicate with bologna and olives, that used to be a common lunch meat for us. now we are eating more ground chuck (which i do prefer) and less hot dogs, but it won't be too long before Mom wants a few hot dogs. i'm pretty sure she's addicted to them, but she also really likes corn dogs...

Me too!!! I miss olive loaf. And ate a lot of braunschweiger sandwiches too, something I've since lost my taste for.

My father raised dogs, so had a bin of dry dog food in the kitchen, to mix with cooked-down scraps from the local butcher. I was about 5-6 YO at the time, and would snack on that dry dog food whenever no one was looking. I have to laugh at all of those 'picky kid' commercials... when I was young, everything tasted good.

That was also my 'volcano phase', when I would pour every powder in the pantry into a pile, and take turns either blowing into it with a straw, or sucking it up. As I recall, the mixture of flour, sugar, instant milk, and cocoa was delicious. Needless to say, my Mother ended that phase very quickly (but less painfully than she ended my 'I wonder if linoleum burns' phase. :ep)

I was very 'taste and see' as a kid. Ate peach pits from the neighbor's tree, thinking they were almonds... fortunately only one or two at a time, since I had to bang them on rocks to open them. Ate roasted acorns too - again only one or two at a time - because I heard that the local Indian tribes had eaten them. Then read a mushroom book, and thought I was an expert on which were edible (and tried most of them). It's a wonder that both I & my mother survived my childhood.

Well, the kid inside us is always there, but how about now? Anything you love so much and others just can't understand?

Ha! Before reading this, DW decided on pancakes for a second breakfast. That's my compromise choice for the 2 of us since she would want Belgium waffles and I would waffle to this side of the border. I don't understand the desire for BIG holes in the waffle and prefer the small :).

Cilantro in food is probably what I have always liked and so many people consider weird. As a little kid, I liked the smell of it in the Chinese restaurants and liked the fried rice because it made so much use of cilantro.

Fortunately, DW likes it also. Lucked out there. Cilantro, roots and all, was in our chicken and rice soup, last night ;).
