    tomatoes not turning red!?!

Thanks for posting that website Sarah. Very helpful. I'm in zone 10 and have a million tomatoes of all varieties. I just love them. It's been unusually cool and they taste great but not as good as when it's really hot. I wonder if the sun makes them sweeter.

I have a kitchen full of pears!!! Suggestions please.

My grandmother use to make pear fruit leather. It was soooo....good. Hmmm...maybe I'm going to have to make some. I'm sure she got her recipe from the Sunset Garden magazine. This was way back in the 70's when she made it. Great packable snack.

Brugmansia this morning (resized but big pics!)

Those are beautiful!! I didn't know they were called Brugsmansia. I remember seeing them all over the area of Guatemala where I lived while I was in the Peace Corps. I remember my ex-mother-in-law, who is Guatemalan, telling me that people used the flower by puting it under their pillow if...

How can I fix my soil so my beans and cukes stop getting diseased?

I had been looking into rye grass or barley as cover crops. I have already ordered some beneficial nematodes and was going to ask if I should do them now. Won't they die if I wait until I'm done solarizing? Can I put them in the fridge for 4-6 weeks? I didn't plan that one out well. If I add...

How can I fix my soil so my beans and cukes stop getting diseased?

Thanks Oakland. I'll try the two ideas to see if it is bacterial wilt. I did some more research after I pulled up one of the plants. The roots were covered in all of these little nodes. It looks like I have nematode root knot. I think that's what it was called. I'll have to check that site...

How can I fix my soil so my beans and cukes stop getting diseased?

Tutter: We have some students at Franklin, I teach at Franklin as well as having my son attend, that come to Franklin instead of Cherimoya. From what I hear Cherimoys is not as good as it use to be. Hopefully it will get better. Do you remember what street the bakery was on? We have a donut...

oh, Man. I am sooooo jealous. Can you come live with me and help me can? I'm too afraid to start by myself. I'll take good care of you. All of your canning looks wonderful. Do you have a special canning kitchen? Bread and Butter pickles are, hands down, my all time favorite. And they...

How can I fix my soil so my beans and cukes stop getting diseased?

Hi Tutter: Yes, I have brought in new soil (from a nursery) and tried plants in the planters, but these too ended up getting diseased. I thought I might have spread the disease with infected trowels or my hands. Yes, I live in Los Feliz. I live south of Los Feliz Blvd. Just one block south of...

How can I fix my soil so my beans and cukes stop getting diseased?

Thanks for the great tips Oakland. You truly are a treasure trove of information. I have been very careful with the diseased plants and put them in the garbage for fear of spreading the disease. I have not tried solarizing and will definitely do this. Is it o.k. to do at the end of this...

How can I fix my soil so my beans and cukes stop getting diseased?

I have planted many types of (organic and non gmo) string bean and cucumber plants and seeds for the past four years. I have boxes/raised beds and have tried planting in different ones every year with no success. The plants start off beautifully, I pick one nice harvest then it's down hill...

    Corn troubles

I live in Los Feliz and had exactly the same experience as you did but I just used a different variety of corn. I had a couple of full sized ears and smaller ears with the tops undeveloped but nice kernels on the bottom. They tasted great but a were a little diappointing. I'm going to try...

    tomatoes not turning red!?!

I bought the red plastic mulch from an online garden supplier for the first time this year and have found that my tomatoes are turning red very quickly. I swear they seem to turn red overnight. It's amazing!! It was very cheap, it also keeps the weeds down and keeps moisture in.

    What do I have here?

It looks like a thai chili. Not positive but I had some last year that looked like that. They're hot and taste great when roasted then added to stir fry or salsa.

What's a good heirloom seed catalog?

I like to use The Natural Gardening Company. They are all organic and I like that are here in California.
