2018 Little Easy Bean Network - Join Us In Saving Amazing Heirloom Beans

I was trying to learn more about the difference between 'pole' and 'runner' beans and came across this:
  • Runner beans twine around their supports in a clockwise direction. Pole beans twine in a counter-clockwise direction. This is important to note if you are ‘helping’ the young vines find their poles.
I thought one of the folks on this forum would know if it's accurate. Perhaps, I've never really paid close enough attention to the vining traits of my plants and may be guilty of trying to make them go against their nature. Also, any input on my original question would be welcome...still a bit unclear on the differences between 'pole' and 'runner' - any input (or a point to a good reference) would be welcome.

Thanks in advance for the help!

This is my first year growing runner beans, so I can't tell you yet if it's true they turn in opposite way. However runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus) are a different plant species than pole beans and bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris).

i wonder if it has anything to do with what hemisphere they evolved/were selected in?

i've never actually noticed because i rarely grow runners.

and speaking of twining, the potted beans i planted out are not having an easy time of staying on or growing up the stakes i put next to them.
