A Suggestion of Frost

We have lucked out so far, but 37 is predicted for tonight. Sad, we have had so much rain, everything is still so green and healthy. It's not as hard to take when it all looks like crap anyway. I have a few tomatoes yet to pick, and lots of beans, will probably lose a bunch of peppers that are not quite ready. At least the carrots and beets will wait for me.

If they are off on the cold front we may squeak out another week, or two! :fl I am never ready for this! :\

Oh, rats Heather!

The thermometer in my small covered front entry registered a low of 32.
I'm sure it was colder out in the open. I got the tomatoes covered and will have to pick and process all the peppers today. The flowers are drooping in the garden....

36.9° at the weather station and no sign of frost on the neighbor's lawn. Left the sprinklers off ... Meanwhile, at the dahlia garden ...

Blackened leaves, brown petals. The little veggie garden has lost half its basil plants, those nearer the evergreens look fine. The zucchini looks seriously damaged. The same thing happened last year. Those plants are vulnerable and air movement, or something, make those nicely protected gardens traps for colder air than the gardens out in the open, under the stars.

I've got the sprinklers on the dahlias now. The flower buds look okay and there should undamaged blooms in a few days.

In spite of covering the tomatoes with sheets last night I lost them all. :(

There is a pepper plant that had some serious tomato sprawl over it that survived. I just got home and am taking a tiny break, then I'm going out and starting the cleanup. At least the sun is shining and it's a beautiful day.
Makes it less depressing to cleanup up frost carnage than when it's rainy and gloomy.

I guess we've been lucky here this year in "frosty acres". We covered the basil for tonight and closed up the hoop houses, but we don't really expect the frost to hit here tonight, just a chance. I'd love to have a couple more weeks to process things....
