About a dozen years ago, when we lived in Livingston, in town, I kept hens in the backyard. I mentioned to a neighbor lady that I was going to butcher a couple of old hens. She wanted to participate in order to learn how. So she and her 4 kids came over.

I showed her how to end the hens life. Since I was going to skin them, I cut off the wings. I opened one out and fanned myself, acting silly. Immediately the kids clamored for a wing and they all played with chicken wings, giggling and laughing. They ran all over the yard, having a great time.

Neighbor lady got her hands dirty, she got right in there with me. I sent her home with one of the hens and she made a pot of soup. Kids took their wings, I imagine at some point their mom claimed the wings for the trash. She was amazed at the smell of the simmering chicken, and how good ithe soup tasted.

Can't beat home raised CCX. There simply is no taste comparison to store bought CCX. Wait until you get some heritage breed turkeys and you wonder why you didn't raise them before.

I’m kicking around the idea of a home raised Thanksgiving turkey. Maybe not this year, but it’s in my head, and I will probably raise a couple to try that out.

Just remember heritage breeds are not the modern broad breasted couch potato turkeys.

Yes WBB and BBB, I've raised both - won't ever again. Heritage takes longer but tastes so much better. My opinion, your mileage may vary.

I’ve been mowing. My 23 HP Kubota has a 4’ bush hog, so I ain’t exactly setting any world records. I’m mowing in the back field, it’s the biggest, the fence is the worst. And it has a bodacious crop of hemlock I want to get mowed before it sets seed. And bitter weed too. Too bad I can’t put the sheep in there, they ate the flowers off the bitter weed in their pasture. Bitterweed was getting 21/2’ tall! Son mowed the sheep pasture and the front pasture, they are the most important. He’s gone to a job in south Louisiana, left yesterday.

I’ll chip away at the back field until I get it done. Nearly out of diesel, so I parked the tractor. Truck went to the body shop yesterday for hail damage, so not hauling diesel in my car. Taking a short break.

County is here, pulling up trees in the fence row, I took out 2 T-posts this morning and cut the wire. They are extending my culvert by 30’ to make it possible to get in and cut off here with long trailers. I’m excited!

I worked on driveway fence this morning. I cut fence at the H brace, wrapped it around the post and stapled it.

Then I took clips off T-posts for about 40’, pulled posts and rolled up the wire.

This is where the small barn will go. I needed to roll the wire back to allow space for a dump truck.

Carson has decided the front seat isn’t big enough for him to get up on it. So he gets half way on the seat.

While I was working on taking down the fence, he found a shady spot out in the field where he could see me.
