My chicks will be coming in ONE MONTH from today! Super excited. Can't wait to add on to my flock I will be getting red stars, black stars, cuckoo marans, auraucanas, buff orpingtons, golden polish, and some cornish x rocks. Yay! Who else took the plunge?

great news! I'd love to get some new chickie babies but need to wait to get the fence and run fixed up so we don't have the disaster I had last year and lost all my girls. My DH is working away so it'll be awhile until we can get things redone.
I guess I have to live through other peoples chicken fun on forums and other people's blogs. I still have Lulu, my lame house chicken but she thinks she's a person not a chicken.

I think in the fall I might get a couple to replace the Barred Rocks that I don't think are laying anymore. They are four years old, I wll wait through the summer to see if they are still laying at all. I am only getting one to three eggs a day at the moment from six hens. During the summer, I was getting tons of eggs!

That is exciting news Hotpepperqueen!!
Soon you'll be collecting fresh eggs from them when they get bigger. Now thats really exciting going to get fresh eggs every day.

I just have quails and doves now in my backyard, I hope one day to raise other kinds of birds.

I have 10 EE eggs in the incubator. Day 5 so I'll have babies in 16 days.

I have 25 Freedom Rangers coming on Feb 17th! This will be our first foray into "real" meat birds -- we processed a few extra roosters last year, but they were hardly worth the effort.

I'm trying to find some turkey eggs local so I can hatch them and raise Thanksgiving dinner, but I have not found the kind I want within driving distance. I don't want or need the big broadbreasted ones, but want the smaller ones. I'm surprised at how hard that is to find around here.

About the first of March, I'll be getting some eggs from Black Ameraucana and Blue Ameraucana to hatch and get some colored eggs into my basket. I found someone local that raises these for a local restaurant that serves locally raised free range chicken, so they should suit my purposes well, which is more for meat than eggs. But I do like the colored eggs.

I will definitely be posting pictures for you all! It's so exciting to hear about everyone's chicken adventures. I hope everyone else posts pictures of their little babies when they get here. I really am hoping to get a rooster at some point this summer so I can hatch my own eggs. I asked my boyfriend for a small incubator for my birthday but we will see how that goes Keep up all the stories- I love reading them!

Rebbetzen, it is normal to get fewer eggs in winter unless you provide additional light. Chickens lay eggs based on the amount of light they get. Long summer days=lots of light=nearly daily eggs from most hens! Yum, plenty of eggs for chili rellenos just when the peppers are in season.
