@Nyboy , I went down to the barn and looked at DH's lawn mower this evening and actually they do make an adapter like you were originally asking about. This is what he has, which is fitted to the cart. It would probably make turns better and pull more weight without possibly breaking than using a bolt and hitch pin would.

Can be purchased online here at Northern Tool & Equipment. Not an expensive part either. They have several in different sizes and tow weight ratings.

If bolt breaks, you are pulling WAY too many tons. Agree though, if he has box tongue, would be nice as long as he makes sure it takes the same ball size he has.

Will have to buy a bit to bore the holes.

Have him also measure the width of the channel on the drawbar that comes out from the cart. Looks like there are a couple different sizes for that too. DH got his a size too small, but it still works.
