Grew up n Illinois. Had a beautiful tree in neighborhood. Lady that owned it, thought of it as trash tree. After frost, they were ok. Not a huge fan although I can eat them.

What happens with cream of tartar?

In certain combinations with other things -

the result would probably be like dropping Mentos in Coke bottles.

Well Seed',

we'd want the rookie to survive the experience.

Passersby, too ...

The cultivated varieties are huge compared to the wild ones and sweeter, more of an actual fruit. I think those hail from Japan? I don't know of anyone who has planted one, so I wonder if they can even be grown here.

You can't bear to eat the wild native ones until after frost and they've dropped to the ground themselves. Then you're fighting the deer to get them and they only drop a couple at random, so it's nearly impossible to get enough to do anything with, unless you have tons of trees. They do grow wild here, small fruit, about the size of a quarter or so. I do know the trees make excellent firewood, one of the highest BTUs.

I don't know, Mary; maybe if nothing else they'd be good in a smoothie. I'm sure they're packed with vitamins and minerals.

Sigh, does that mean my fruit is growing on native rootstock?

I was hoping that -- like my pullets -- the fruit was starting out small and would get bigger next season. Journey11, you are such a spoil-sport and dream crusher. Thank you for the information. If it's no longer a MEADER, it might have to go.

Hachiya or Fuju"s? I LOVE Hachiya's! Next time you're coming up, I'll meet you to take some Hachiya's off your hands! I eat one every morning for Bfast when I find them.
