Here's that soil temperature germination table that I've posted before:

Notice that they either didn't test or most seeds failed to germinate at 104F. Some wouldn't germinate at 95!

If your location, and particularly the seed starting environment, is getting close to 100 - that's just too warm.

OK, if true confession is what I am doing here....in the picture to the left. You will see a pyrex loaf pan. There is corn in that....Silver Queen. That is only from 1998. Hey! my heart has always been in this...it is just that working and illness does get in the way.

What comes to mind here is a line I heard from the movie Jurassic Park...."Life finds a way". Here is hoping that just because...that maybe....just maybe.... there is just a little life left in those seeds. I hate to throw away seeds.

I say those seeds will probably germinate. Now, maybe not ALL of them but just this year I planted some globe amaranth and some Mexican Bird of Paradise from seeds my mother had saved back in the mid 90's - they all sprouted! And last year I started cantaloupe seeds she had saved a good 10+ yrs ago. So I am like HiD - pay no mind to those dates! Good luck! I love seed starting.....

Wow! I've got cantaloupe seeds that old. I am going to try to start them too. I am so glad I mentioned "old" seeds. They are mark as being from 1998 and they are called Imperial 45.

The Farmers Almanac says we should start some seeds two days before the full moon so I am going to start some more on Friday and see how it goes

I started the last batch two days before the last full moon and they are all strong little seedlings now

hedging my bets here and planting by the moon this season! why not?

Would you believe I already have germination on my lettuce? It is about an eighth of an inch high. However, I see some fuzzy stuff on it. Mold?

I am going to leave the top off the seed tray. Does anyone have any other ideas? :mow

i am sooo tempted to start my seeds this weekend! i'll just have to wait a couple more weeks for most on them to get started in my zone.

The first sprinkle of snapdragon seed and nearly one-half of the pepper seeds are in the starting mix here.

About a week from now, the remainder of this seed will be planted. Separating the plantings is a form of insurance. Ten days apart sowing times can make a big difference when it comes time to set transplants out. Early or late warm weather - I'm trying to cover my bases.

I thought I was the only one who did that crazy moon thing. I actually had my brother doing it last year. He always used to make fun of me.

Good luck with your seed starting, but once they germinate you will need to put them under a light. I put them 2-4 inches from the light source to keep them from getting spindlely. Nothing worse then putting all the work into it and ending up with 6 - 8 inch string plants that can stand up. Been there, done that.

Wow, it's great that you all are getting started! I'm ready, but I'm a little nervous because there's still snow on everything and piled up everywhere! (I think I need a hug ) Here in Nebraska, we can't plant until May 15th or after, so I still have a loooong way to go! Almost 3 months! I don't know if my seedlings will last inside that long, so maybe I should wait another couple of weeks? But all you guys are making it really hard - your progress sounds so encouraging! Way to go!

8 Patio Red Macroni
6 Quadrato D Asti

I need to hurry and get in the

Cayanne
Eggplant
Serranos
Thai Hot

My goal is to have a pepper overload.

Since I am so late I also will be starting my cukes and squash soon since it is only 3 weeks for my last frost.
