I really like that tarp and sawdust idea. Not only will it keep weeds and grass down, at the end of the season just roll it up and you have compost.

I have to start mine by the first weekend of April to have it ready by my last frost date. If I start it sooner I can plant early with cloches :-D and row covers. I'm only doing nine bales in the main garden so it's going to be H shaped. @canesisters you can send those pictures to Joel and he'll post them on his site too
