Spent about an hour with the spading fork digging out bindweed scattered about by the tractor guy. This will be the location for the last planting of sweet corn and those weeds had made a good start after 2 months of being ignored. No more! But, I will have to be back multiple times ...
Built trellis over the peas. Dang! It is on a 45' bed this year ... I had more pea trellises in past seasons but don't remember having one this looong. Three types of peas and 2 sowings for some of them in that ground. I bet some of those vines are having a good time climbing that string this morning.
Hilled the potatoes. Another 45' location but only a single row. I must have found 20 potato beetles during the process! They joined the organic fertilizer that went down before I moved all that dirt around the plants. This location is where I rely on the tractor guy and don't make compost. Compost has been my hilling material in the spuds in recent years. Moving dirt with a shovel was okay - at least, it was readily at hand.
Next: Going for a few hours of rototilling and lawn mowing the garden perimeter. I say "lawn" but I doubt if it's more than 40% any kind of desirable grass. Probably 10% salsify with 50% dandelion, 30% dock, and another 10% black medic. There might be 3% Italian thistle, I'll have to watch out for but the 2% Johnny jump ups should be able to dodge the blade ...!
