I am able to grow artichokes. I mulch well in winter and pull it away when I see new growth from under the mulch.
I am zone 5, but we have had some winters that are like 4.

Whoa--are you talking Jerusalem artichokes or the ones I would more typically associate with warmer weather, the ones that are the above-ground flowering fruit of the artichoke plant (sorry, very clumsily worded)?

I overheard a conversation here, during a garden tour, in which one of the women (and I am basically positive both were locals) talked about growing artichokes here to the point of 'some' harvest, with considerable winter protection and having exactly the right site for them.

Googling to confirm whether my recollection of the conversation was ballpark possible, I found http://www.coldclimategardening.com/2005/10/30/artichoke-question/ which has various suggestions.

You could *try*. Worst that happens is it doesn't work :p

Pat, wondering if kitten trees climb (and get stuck atop) themselves

Mine are the prickly thistle looking globe artichokes. I do grow Jerusalem artichokes but I assumed the question was about globes.
I grow green and red and they get as big as those in the grocery from California.

The reds are smaller but I love baby artichokes so I'm fine with smaller, too.

Rhubarb

Too hot down here for it.

And Mangoes

Not hot enough for it.
If you put rhubarb in an afternoon shaded area it should grow. I am zone 9 & it grows here for us in the afternoon shade.
