5 years later, i'm back.

possibly it is Asteraceae Hieracium gronovii L., queendevil hawkweed .

though it's not an exact match, but it's as close as i could come.

thanks to y'all i am accidentally learning how to do better searches on the usda website to narrow down what i'm looking for.

once i narrowed it down to a possible genus, i looked at every species of that genus that is known to the u.s. and the only one that was close was queendevil. there aren't many good pictures to do a very good comparison, so.....maybe :hu

Hi PunkinP,

I've been poking around on my laptop to see if I can find any photos that match your mystery plant.

I have just found this site on the Queendevil you were suggesting it was:

http://www.missouriplants.com/Yellowalt/Hieraceum_gronovii_page.html

To me it just doesn't match up with your photos but they ring a distant bell in my old & feeble brain.

So I shall go on searching................................ :caf ...... :caf ...................to see if I can discover what it is !

I'm back again ! :D

Have a look at these pages:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hieracium_murorum_leaning_stalk.jpg

http://www.answers.com/topic/hawkweed

The second one one lists all the different hawkweeds..................... :th

plus here are a lot of photos:

http://www.google.co.uk/images?q=do...avclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B3GGGL_enGB306GB306

Your plant appears to have more of a point to it's petals rather than the flatter ends of the hawkheads. Can you get a good close-up of one?

Thanks for helping!!!

Clever old digitS'! :bow

Steve, it certainly looks as if you have tracked it down -- it even mentions the smell in it's common name -- Camphorweed

PunkinP -- I'm so pleased that Steve solved your little problem -- he is a WHIZ at solving problems -- we are so lucky to have him on this forum. :bow

It certainly looks like you have a really useful plant growing nearby.

Good luck with your research on the plants that grow around you!

A friend came over the other day and got some great pics of the camphor weed (much much better than mine) along with a gorgeous butterfly.
