ducks, I don't have metal weave. I think you were referring to someone else's post.

I don't have grow lights either. I start them on top of my fridge and once sprouted I move them to a south exposure bathroom window. I have to keep rotating them since they will grow towards the light. It's a pain so I normally don't grow things from seed. During the day I take them outside to the deck where there's shade but light is brighter.

@ninnymary, do you have them on an outdoor white metal chair? Regardless, your tomatoes should still do well, even if a little leggy.

Just let them grow, they'll be fine. When you put them in their new pot just bury them up to the top leaves.

yes, exactly! most will root out from the stem if given a chance. we always bury ours pretty deeply to help them have a more stable moisture level. we used to bury 5 gallon buckets with holes in the bottom so we could get water down through the clay more easily, but have given up on that (the holes would clog too easily and bigger holes would drain too quickly). now i just try to remember to water more frequently...

@Gardening with Rabbits I bought a similar one with 4 shelves on each side. The I cut boards to go across the back, giving me 4 more shelves. I bit the bullet and bought LED grow lights, 2 heat mats with a regulator and I put a small heater in it. It is on the screened in porch. so far, so good. I still have 3 trays in the garden tub with a shop light above them. LOL

Wow! That sounds really great. I am not sure it would be warm enough for me here in Idaho without a porch. I can put them outside in it when the sun is shinning even very cold weather and the heat lamp brings the heat up. I have been using several plastic put together places on the patio, but it is hard since no shelves. Everything is on the patio and means a lot of moving trays and hard to reach to water.

So...any of you growing onion seeds and NOT using grow lights? If so, how long does it take them to get from these little hairs into a fuller, three leaves plant? So far I've got hairs and the hairs aren't doing much of anything. Just looking fragile and limp, though watered well.

Planted on Jan 20th, germinated around the 23-24th but since then not much happening.

I put mine under lights and then moved to a window. Put they were already like nice lush grass.Maybe too well watered?

I tried seed starting last year. They sprouted, but just sat there. I don't know if it was the lighting (regular florescent shop light) or the organic soil I used. This year, I bought some LED grow lights off of Amazon and I'm using seed starting potting soil. Much better results this year.

My Brandywines, Amish Paste, Yellow Pear tomatoes have sprouted and growing 2nd/3rd leaves. My eggplant, kolhrabi & Tangerine Dream (pepper) have sprouted. My Jimmy Nardello's are the slowest to sprout. I have them sitting on a heating pad. Five of them have sprouted so far. I just hope they all keep growing until planting time.

My seed starting table in one of the upstairs bedrooms. Nothing fancy, but it's working so far this year.

Peppers can be the seeds I have the most trouble with. Optimum sprouting temperature is a little higher than what I have overnight up high in my kitchen.

I usually say "on top my fridge" but somehow that sounds chilly! It isn't. My old fridge used to be real good at putting out some heat but the coils are within inches of the floor on this model. A better location, for my seed sprouting activities, would be for the heat to be on the back of the fridge and a little closer to my seeds and soil .

Anyway, peppers are things that I carry to the sunny South Window and then return to the warm kitchen overnight ... at least the chili don't have to experience that chilly room, overnight.
