for some reason i thought it was much more than that. :)

is there a concerted effort to raise the whole area up through time?
There are parts nearby that are 13 ft below sea level. I think 22 ft is the lowest in Holland.
I'ts actually getting lower each year because the land is slowly sinking.
There are no plans to raise the area, as it is impossible to do so. They do raise streets up every decade or so but this brings problems with buildings that are well foundated and some that sink with the land.

interesting, sounds similar to New Orleans and other river delta towns (Venice being notable for building upper levels with doors in them so when they sink they eventually get used). i've never been to any of these places (including Europe).

i was thinking that perhaps there would be some people who would want to bring in some fill to make sure their place is raised up a bit and then everyone around them would say that's a great idea and they'd do the same and then everyone would be back to where they started but only a little higher until the next round happened. :)

cheers... :)

I remember from the last time they raised the streets 15-20 years ago, that the municipality provided sand and soil to raise gardens and paths. Don't know if this was free for everybody though. Me and my friends wheelbarrowed many loads of sand in one of our friends garden. It went up almost 2 ft! As a next door neighbour you were almost forced to do the same or swim! ;)

My father build our house already raised up 3 ft from ground level.

Got some great help from my youngest brother, so it went pretty fast. He drove the woodchips to the apple trees and I to the garden. Used them on most paths. Still need to do the path along the moddersloot (ditch). Even had time to water the greenhouse with my 5 year old nephew, good times! My own son didn't want to come which was a shame but meant I had my hands free.

Harvested a lot od shiitake! They were in better shape than expected with all the rain we've got this past week. It's also been really windy and stormy weather the past 2 weeks, one pole bean structure needs a serious revision!

Yay!

Jen, you should tell us about your ..

. mushroom growing, sometime. Did I already miss it? We have (dry) shiitake in broth for noodles, now and then.
