2019 Little Easy Bean Network - Come And Reawaken The Thrill Of Discovery

Last night was 40 degrees, brrrrrrrr. Beans that are up seemed ok this morning including the Limas. I am a little nervous with the colder weather and did notice that a couple seeds did rot between the time I planted them and when they came up. But I have enough up of all the network beans to replenish the supply. This year has been a challenging year for gardening. I did finish putting in the new rain garden so I'll have more time for vegetables now. YEAH!

I was thinking about you up there in Minnesota knowing how cool it's been here. I was wondering if you were going to hold off on planting. I still have not planted my two backyard bush bean plots. However I did plant 10 seeds of Robert Lobitz's "Lake Avenue Beauty" last week in my backyard flower bed up against the house. Yesterday I noticed they are coming up all 10 of them. Today my backyard bush bean plots get planted before it rains tomorrow.

@BeanQueen,

Last month I traded beans with a fellow from Czech Republic. 12 varieties. I'm growing one of them out this year and the other 11 next year. So stick around and you can get a hold of these when my seed crops mature and dry.

Do you ever take photos of the seed of your varieties?

And Applefest is a little darker version than Dana's Mercury, but can't find a picture.

During the first half of the growing season, Magpie grew next to my mom's French Pole Beans so I suspect they might be a potential pollinator. All the Magpie shelled out normally. Some pods/seeds fell and self-seeded which is then what grew as pole types and in the fall, second half of the season I shelled them and found 5 different outcrosses.

today the last bean garden was planted for me for this season. i have two more to add to my above list - they are wax beans maybe. i need to come up with some working titles for them if they grow and grow true.

as they are growing outside the fence i won't keep track of the germination rates or how many i planted as i'll be happy if any of them survive.

@BeanQueen,

Pretty purple beans. Fun to look at your photos. Yes your Magpie with the scant amount of white on them and mostly black look like a cross. I got a Magpie cross in 2013 and it eventually broke out into 8 slightly different segregations. Amazing what beans can do.

I wish I could tell you which beans I am growing. I know that some are Kentucky Wonder and some are Purple Queen, but I didn't save the packages. I am SUCH a bean newbie!! :hide Still, I grew some last year and froze about 3 quarts. This year I have them planted in 3 beds so far, and I seeded heavily since 1/2 of my bean seeds were good for 2018.
I will take a picture of the ones that I stored in a cleaned out pickle quart jar and labeled, "2012." Maybe somebody on this thread could identify them and I could make the strips as I plant. So far, it looks like almost all the beans that I planted have sprouted, although some sat for a couple of weeks before breaking the ground. I also interspersed them with some lima beans, but those are pretty obvious.
They will ALL taste good...if I don't wear out during the harvest!! :th
