Ugh
It's been just awful. I'm so tired that I've just lost interest in everything at home except dinner & bed.
Eva & Patty Cow are hanging in there. The pasture is just not growing this summer for some reason. She's busted out several times just to get into the brush & woods across the fence. I bought a round bale Tuesday night to try and keep her satisfied. ... buying hay in July ...
The garden is so completely overgrown with grass that I've been hand grazing Eva down the rows to let her mow it... which is actually working believe it or not.
I tried guineas this year. Of the 12 chicks I started with 4 are still alive. They are committing guineasuide at an alarming rate. I'll be shocked if any make it to adult hood. Getting real tired of hunting up dead birds almost every day.
The rest of the girls have been taking turns going broody on nests of smashed eggs. Which means that I get to bathe the sticky off of them once I find the nest so that they don't get flies laying eggs in the goo.
I lost old Rosie (the lab) a little while back to what appeared to be a heart attack. Gilligan grieved so bad I was worried that he was going to stroke out again. Then suddenly one day I came home and he was a puppy again. Bouncing around, barking at things, wanting treats and chewies... things he hasn't done in years. Nice.. but WEIRD.
The romas are ripening by the pound and I'm going to have to set a day for canning or lose the whole crop.
.. maybe next summer will be better.

i'm sorry for the loss of your Pup and all the other trials but i am glad to see you here and saying hello if even just for a moment. hang in there!

Can you rinse them and pop them into the freezer in zip-locs, then can them this winter? The skins would slip right off when they thawed. They take up a to of room but it might buy you some time.

That sounds like a good idea @Ridgerunner . Would I literally just rinse and freeze?? Not have to do anything else? That would actually be a HUGE help!

If they are in decent shape. If you have bad sections you want to cut out or you want to core them before you cook them, you'll have to do that before you freeze them. But if you would normally just cook them that way, rinse them off and pop into a bag. When you take them out let them thaw enough and the skin pulls right off.

I do that too. I cut the blossom end off and core them. Then just bag and freeze.
I am sorry that you are having such a hard summer. Weeds have overtaken my garden, I have been overwhelmed by so much to do. But we are going to take it back!

it has taken me three years to reclaim the whole of the north garden from weeds. it is 98% done being cleared now other than a few tiny clean up details. and i agree with @seedcorn that the garden is potential grazing for two hungry cows so let them at it when you can they'll mow it and trample it back and give you some cow plops too and then the chickens can get at those and eat the fly maggots in the cow plops and scatter them around plus eat anything the cows didn't take care of. i am envious of people who can keep the larger animals and chickens because they can work so well together.
