I know I'm not the only person here that looks at the pretty sunny lawns in suburbia and thinks, "Wow, what a great place for a bunch of (well mulched) raised beds! What a waste to have just a lawn!" :rant
I used (in this order) green logs, old rotted logs, branches, yard clippings, horse manure, dirt, leaves and compost. Then I heavily mulched with straw. Ideally you should build one in the early fall so it will be ready to plant in by the spring.
I started late so mine may not be ready to...
Hey BB!
I built one recently too. Learning about Hugelkulters and permaculture in general has totally changed my way of gardening. I have a whole side yard dedicated to my permaculture experiment.
(I don't throw away cardboard or paper bags either. ;) )
Believe it or not, they are very successful. It is nature's way of gardening. You will NEVER have to till it either, if you mantain it the right way. :)
HI Hidelight,
Apple packs, wow, I never even thought of that!
Well, since we are in the same zone, I want to ask you about starting seeds. I have mini greenhouses like the size of your apple pack greenhouse. Do you have lights and a "warmer"? I don't when do you think I can start my seeds...
Long story short a piglet wandered into my yard about a month and a half ago. Nobody claimed him so he is ours now. My plan is to use him to roto-till and fertilize my new 10 X 20 garden plot for next year's garden. Oh boy, is he a great roto-tiller!!!
Here is a cute photo of him and some of...
You are right pumpkin peep! It is supposed to be fire proof b/c the straw is so compact when it is baled.
The more I research it the easier it sounds! There is a Montessori school not too far from me that was made this way.
I think if I start small with the chickens I can afford to learn...

I have not even started yet. If you keep the straw bales dry during the process, cover them up with earthen-stucco etc. then you will have a nice durable structure that lasts for a very long time.
My plan is to build it using "load bearing"...
Aww thanks!
My garden is a mess right now. It is done until the spring. I did plant my garlic in time and I have some kale in a planter AWAY from my new, wonderful ducks. They will get some when it gets nice and full.
My poor chickens live in a tent city on Sanford and Son's back lot...at...
Just checkin in. I've been up to my ears in sufficient self trying to learn how to make a straw built coop for the girls. :P
I havn't been over here in a while and I just wanted to say HI! :D
:mow <--I'm so glad this guy never makes it to the flower!
