My mom was so thrilled this year. She has entered her crocheted items in the competition at the State Fair only twice. Last year she took blue ribbons on both afghans. Yay Mom!
This year she entered a baby afghan and received a blue ribbon AND sweepstakes!, best in all (70) crocheted items...
For the past two weeks we have had droves of hummers! Ten to twenty at a time fighting over my one little feeder. I know they are just passing through, but I went and picked up 2 more feeders. It was so cool, but you had to be prepared to duck when you walked out the door!
It must...
Some of my Japan garlic developed some small bulbs up on the stem. I had removed the scapes at the curly stage, when they formed. These were 3-4 inches above the bulb.
Are these bulbils also? Would you plant them?
There are so many talented photographers and creative gardeners here, just thought I would let you know, Birds and Blooms is taking photo entries until Sept. 15.
Three categories: Birds, Flowers, Butterflies.
Prize money, and/or a chance to get your photo and story published in a magazine...
With the almost Texas heat we've been having lately, I have been doing more bird watching. Beats cleaning the house when it's too hot to garden. Anyway, I watch every year for Bluebirds. I have had two houses up for several years, making sure they are clean and ready. 'Vacancy' signs still...
Japan, Chesnok Red, and Music ...
Japan went a little long in the ground, a few had split, oops.
Can't wait to try some roasted!
Do you have a favorite variety to roast? I like mild.
I have always tried to encourage my kids that nothing is impossible, believe it and you can achieve it.
But, this is something I never expected!
My son and DIL welcomed their second child into the world on Friday. DIL wanted to wait a bit longer than they had with their first, before going to...
It was suppose to be done for Christmas ...
My daughter designed this organizer to put by her door... for outgoing mail, important notes, coupons, etc.
She has 4 hooks to put in the bottom of the frame for hanging keys or whatever. Her color choice, I would have made it bright flowers...
I have a bunch of Baptisia australis pods ready. If you would like some seed, message me your mailing info and I will get some off to you as soon as I can get them picked and packed.

:D... container planting. I know there's a billion container plant ideas, but what are some of the best, different, or your favorite? Some do better in different climates and I'm always looking for flowers/plants that hang in there for the entire season, especially without TOO much fusing...
I was shopping for some gardening tools for a gift for my niece and found an interesting hand tool. The hinge in my back and my strength is, well, not what it used to be, so I rely more on good hand tools.
It's made by Fiskars, and it's mean and heavy duty, this year I've used it more than any...
Our growing season is a bit late this year, but temps in the 80s has us catching up real quick!.. and it means you have about 3 days to get everything done.. I'm not quite caught up, but getting there... just had to take some time to enjoy the blooms... :)

Furry and cute doesn't always mean great gardening companions, and then there's times ya just have to stop and say "awwwe" ....:)
This tree is at the edge of our woods, I guess the woodpeckers are done with it.
We have finally made the VERY difficult decision to take out our pool. :(
We've had a pool for 26 years, it was a wonderful asset for my daycare - teaching many kids how to swim, and water safety. The liner needed to be replaced this year and the cost/use factor just wasn't justified... not to...
This is NOT for sales, I do local shows only and do not sell online. This is my hobby and I really would like to keep it that way... :) As a crafter, I am always looking for new things to make, so please feel free to add your crafty ideas that you would like to share, or crafts you have found...
@so lucky mentioned making aprons so I thought I would share the aprons I have been making. Maybe you have seen them, they've been around a little while, but it's a neat recycle project if you have some old mens shirts hanging around that you don't know what to do with. (And fabric is getting SO...
How do you keep track of who is who in the garden, in the flats, in the pots?
I ran across a thread on TEG with some great info and ideas - Permanent Marker .. Ha!
I use old mini blinds cut into about 6" pieces and a Retractable permanent Sharpie (seems to work better than other sharpies). I...

Just one more reason to search for organic sources ... and ask a lot of questions about what you are buying...
I found this deer repellent recipe on Washington state DNR website three years ago.
It's easy, cheap, and it works better than anything else I have tried in my long battle with the beasts!
It also seems to repel rabbits, but unfortunately not woodchucks...:rant
Use on ornamentals only, NOT on...
