Well in the interest of full disclosure, *we've* only canned 62 jars of the current bean tally (110 total now after last night's 12). We invited another family to garden with us, and we split everything, so they've canned the rest. Before the season is over though I expect we'll each exceed...
Yep, we used skewers when we grilled it, although we only used one and they would spin around when I flipped them... I never thought to use two skewers - won't be making that mistake again!
Maybe this is common knowledge to you smart gardening folk around here, but it was new to us when we tried it! We're trying to eat healthier so frying is out of the question, so we marinated/poured-over a mixture of salt/pepper/olive oil/red wine vinegar, and grilled 'em up. Honestly, they...
We LOVE salsa verde so we went all out this year - last year we had about 5 tom plants, this year we planted over 30. :weee
Definitely stake/cage them, and get the largest cages you can find. They will fill it! Pick them when the husks appear dry and the tom has just about filled out the...
What's all this talk of beans no good to can? Shame on the lot of you! :smack
I grew up on canned green beans, and now with a family of my own we can them too and my kids love them. It's about the only vegetable I can get them all to consistently eat (especially my ultra picky...
No webs that I've seen, and no consistent pests. There are the usual ants, grasshoppers, crickets, and maybe a spider or two - nothing that stands out though.
Okay well while that's disappointing news that they are done, it's somehow easier to accept than thinking I had some disease that I let progress too far. It also gives me hope that the Jade seeds I planted last week (and have now started popping up!) will produce in the early fall.
Thank you...
So far the beans (Jade, bush type) this year have been doing fine - the plants themselves were a little smaller than expected but the yield has been as expected. We planted 6 50' rows and have canned over 50 jars so far this year.
A few weeks ago we noticed one of the rows starting to develop...
Strangely, yes! I grew up on a large crop farm and we also had enormous gardens for our family's use, and being that I was the only male sibling I was tasked with a large portion of the garden work. When I moved out and left for college I swore I'd never set foot in a garden again.
To make a...
Tomatillos = Salsa Verde!
This particular recipe is dead easy, just broil them and dump everything in the blender. Adjust the onion and pepper amounts based on your tolerance level of each, and enjoy!

Just to throw my own anecdote into the mix, we canned for the first time last week and did it successfully on our smooth-top range. We have the 921 All-American canner, and canned 6 quarts (it holds 7) of green beans with no problems at all. Our stove has one of the eyes that can be expanded...
Not knowing the variety widens the possible maturity window for yours, but most sweet potatoes of which I'm aware have a 3-5 month maturity schedule from the date you planted them. Since you're just guessing, I'd give them 3-4 months and then maybe dig around a bit and see if things are ready...
You should see the garden - it looks like it snowed about 2" on it!
The recommendation was for 250lbs for our ~2000 sq ft area, but I didn't really want to do it all at once so I opted for just over half of that for this first attempt. The garden is on somewhat of a slope and I didn't want the...
Smiles, those were my thoughts exactly. So here are the inputs we made today (~2000 sq ft garden):
Hydrated lime: 150lbs
0-45-0 Phosphate: 15lbs
10-10-10: 20lbs (a week ago, after the soil samples were pulled)
Plus we side-dressed the corn today with some 36-0-0 (which we would have done...
