@pauldaoust greasy beans are normally eaten not just at an early snap stage of growth but also later when the pods have become full of seeds. many people who are not familiar with them may not do this, but it was common feature as it increased the amount of nutrition in the beans. also they would be strung up and dried at this stage of green pod fill so they could be used later on (called leather britches). i've never done that myself.

how many seeds will fit per gram is what they use to define small. so if you can get 201 or more in a gram that is considered a small seed. larger seeds fit fewer per gram. they do supply a chart somewhere. most common beans are easily large seeded.

i had to look it up again to be sure. so i did goof in that it needs to be 200 or less, not less than 200.

I have been told by one of our network growers in Canada that Canadians can import 3 kilos of garden seed for personal use without paying for or having the package confiscated. I have simply marked on the customs form going my Canadian recipient "Pkts Of Garden Seed" in the quantity column write the number of packets being sent, and it always gets to my recipient. I don't divulge wheather the contents are beans or other kinds of seed.

A shipment of seeds came in the mail today. Among other things, two hyacinth beans, and 5 varieties of Chinese yardlong beans. What I find remarkable is that the seeds of each yardlong bean are so different, that I could probably separate them if they were mixed together. I'm really anxious to trial them, to see how many survive in my climate.
