How is your county and its hospitals doing? Here is NPR, working with info from the University of Minnesota and Department of of HHS:

LINK As you read the story, a link to the NPR "tool" shows up in the first few paragraphs.

The only nearby hospital in the county has an ICU at 97% capacity. Of help, in the next county and in a different state, the several hospital ICUs there are holding at 60-some %. Not good and I don't know how state and insurance companies are dealing with transferring patients.

And then, there is this ... seems that there was some question about the first shot but I'm not sure ... maybe just a big iggy.

here's one history of hospitalisations. it is one that i've followed since last summer and they keep it up fairly well.

i tried to find a breakdown by county, but there's nothing i've been able to find that does that. from looking at the hospitals that i know are in our county i'd guess we're at about 70% of overall hospital capacity, but i don't know what percentage of ICU use things are at now. 70% happens to also be about where the whole state is at, but i do know some areas are worse off than where we are at.


the formatting of this first part is bad, but i don't know how to fix it. so these are the column names.

i can't say anything about recent news, i've been avoiding a lot of it the past few days.

Michigan has offered hospitalization data, including inpatients, critical care patients and ventilator use for COVID-19 since April 12, 2020.

1st doses given of both vaccines is about 800,000 (about 8%)
2nd dose is so far about 130,000

total population about 10 million peeps.


my impression of _The Hill_ is not all that great. i try to notice headlines and the types of things they cover and how they may skew their choices of words when reporting to generate more drama (more clicks). since i haven't read a lot of their reporting in depth though i can't say if my impression is right or wrong, just that i've got a question mark on them. not sure i have the energy to actually go there and hunt more as to why i'm getting the sense i am.

for news i rely more on BBC and Canada News and also NPR because at least i know where they are coming from (left and critical which i understand so i can deal with that at least i know where they are at). i don't mind other news sources too, since if i do have the energy i will look into them and how they operate and who is behind them. usually you can tell by their choices of headlines and how much drama they want to stir up on a topic as to what kind of skew they are applying. i'm ok with that, just state it openly. if a story goes beyond the five W's and such, well then i don't really read that author much in the future if i can help it. unless the story is clearly an opinion piece...

@flowerbug , the Hill only put a video on its YouTube webpage. The video starts off with Francis Collins, the geneticist who led the Human Genome Project and became the director of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He is talking about Harris' mother having known her from her work in breast cancer research.

Harris has her shot and then she thanks the people there, commenting how important their jobs are, and says more about her mother. How she would leave her children in California and go off to "Bethesda," how important it was that she made the trip, and how her children only knew that it was far away.

My aggravation comes in when they don't cover some or most of the who, what, when, where, and why's? A journalist tries to cover all five. Someone giving an opinion cherry picks which of these they cover. The way it is presented many people can be confused, thinking someone giving an opinion is actually reporting news. Not even close, it's propaganda. Several years back the managing director of a local TV station had a regular time slot where he came on and stated he was giving his opinion on a local issue. Straight forward and up front. He was highly respected in the business because he was honest about it.

They all put their slant on it, I totally agree. They do that in their wording, the headlines, and what images they show. When I was working overseas several years back English language TV was often limited, newspapers not possible. If I was lucky I could get CNN, Fox, and BBC. I watched all three. If a story showed up on all three I figured it was news. If it were on any two of them I probably should pay attention. But if it were only on one of them I didn't pay it much attention.

what really irks me in looking at that chart/history of the cases here in MI we had this disease down to 6200 active cases (estimated of course i'm sure the number of actual cases was higher than that, but we can only go by what they detected) and were well within' the realm of getting it squashed down even further. so close, yet so far. now we are again squashing it down again, but it will be some time yet to get things rolling with the vaccines. just hoping these new variants don't get going too much before we can get it squished. 75000 cases is better than 220000 cases. still time to hunker down and get the shots. wish i could get one.

Mom just talked to her older friend who got one and she said she didn't even know she got it. no side-effects, same for her other close friend that Mom actually visits once a week (she's one of our pod people) who got the shot, she didn't have any side-effects either. so both of them are on their first shot. the person we worry about the most i think got her first shot at the same time - she has a lot of complications including COPD. i'm just glad to hear that they've gone that far. keep the shots coming.

I got my first shot last week, the Moderna version. I am old enough to qualify, it was pure age. My arm was a little sore for a couple of days but no worse than the pneumonia or flu shots. No side effects.

If we want certainty, we are in the wrong universe.

exactly, there's a lot of moving parts in our world, sometimes things do happen by coincidence. glad they are doing better. if they've already been exposed the vaccine is just a booster.
