One Alaskans greenhouse

the only flies i'd want to get rid of would be the deerflys or horseflys that bite. the rest don't bother me unless it's about to rain. which reminds me i was going to look that up and see if they know why the flies bite only when it is going to rain.

I understand that the insects party hard in Alaska bc their time is short!!
I thought it was fascinating that YOU have bees that cannot live anywhere else, including the tundra.

Those Bumblebees are faster than my honey bees and it took a couple try’s to get him in a decent position, sorta like photographing lightening.
They’ve been working the potato blossoms for a while now.

This is the first of the sunflowers to open And our first experience with them. As quickly as they go from a bud to a flower it shouldn't be long before we discover what other colors we have, supposedly there’s at least 3 others?

These are such beautiful photos, it's not easy to get bee pictures. Mine are always blurred! Your potatoes look so wonderfully healthy and green, they are clearly appreciating how you prepared their beds.

@heirloomgal , i dont see much for flys anywhere on the property; even around the compost or bunnies And certainly not in the garden. You’d think with this many in a trap (in a two week period) you would see them elsewhere. Also; the traps are within 50 ft. Of each other. In this general vicinity the poly drum is located where i render salmon carcasses. The drum is entirely sealed with no fly’s in evidence around it either. kind of a mystery to me where they all come from but im happy to have found a way to control them. Now if someone would make a scent based trap that worked this well for mosquitos id be in hog heaven.

The good thing about any of those traps is that they work. The bad thing is they bring the pests from a mile around.

Im probably bored! I’ve had this seed storage idea for a while and today, decided to see what it would look like. This is a slice of a greenhouse panel with bee’s wax plugs. This was seed from an Anise Hysopp that grew in a pot in the greenhouse. This section is in the fridge and im happy with this crude first attempt. Going forward i’ve got more of an idea of how i want to plug the ends to be more user friendly.
i’ll germ test a bit of the seed now then again in the spring and decide if i want to continue or abandon the project.

it is always fun to try new things out to see how they go.

if you have a lot of storage space using larger containers is ok. i've found out myself that the 2oz plastic sample cups and covers do work and it is nice that they stack together when empty, but they take up too much space for storage so eventually i'll switch over to the small heavy mil plastic ziplock bags instead. i have a few thousand sample cups to use up first so this may never actually get done unless i manage to give the sample cups away. using the smaller envelopes would take up about 1/5 to 1/4 of the space i'm currently using and that would free up space to keep more samples, plus they are easier to look at the contents without having to open the sample.

Another Bumble bee; of a different sort than i normally see. Smaller and faster but very focused on the Nasturtiums which made pictures easy.
