As far as McDonalds feeding sick animals, beyond stupid--no one does. Most of McDonalds beef is grass fed beef.

If someone is offended at word stupid, I'm amazed that commercial AG and food industry is implicated in feeding sick animals. In commercial Ag, animals are healthier and raised in a more sanitary way that they ever have in history of world.

Hey Mary, at least you get real chicken eggs. Lots of people never even get fresh eggs.
So true so Lucky. I also get fresh organic veggies just picked from the garden! I really am a country girl at heart and I do pretty well for my small city lot.

Fresh raw milk like fresh eggs are as fine as they can get.

The government tries to make it impossible to buy or sell fresh raw milk.

Small farms have been raided is some states and news released implying foul product, with no follow up if and when it is found there is no connection to the farmers product.

In Nevada people are not allowed to sell their fresh/raw milk no matter what it's intended use, you can sell your milk to a dairy in some cases and they can sell it.

This is why: People lease a % of a cow, paying so much for the month and receive a given amount of milk.

Milk protein is changed/damaged by processing. If you make cheese or cultured milk products you know this.

We have our testing done at UC Davis in California. We have a closed herd, even for the use of our Registered Jersey Bull, we require the cow to be examined or we will sell straws.

The risk of contamination is greater at a large dairy farm for reasons that are obvious and testing in not always prompt, and inspections are infrequent.

Valley, go to a commercial dairy, then go visit 100 small dairies. Go with open mind. Commercial dairies will be spotless in milking area and wherever milk goes. Small dairies will have manure every where. Cows may or may not be wading in mud/mire parts of the year.

Raw milk was outlawed to be sold due to all the health problems. Raw milk used immediately from tested negative cows is fine. Shelf life is really short and I was raised on raw. Personally, I'd allow it to be sold and let buyer beware.

valley, not sure who told you but large commercial dairies are inspected daily. Every cow that is milked has her milk tested every time she milks. Most have vets on staff. Prevention is the cheapest therapy.

Hi seedcorn, You're right on. Our farmers, rancher and dairies have made America's food the safest and cleanest. It, our food, is less than that today because too much is imported. I come from a farming area where my folks had a ranch, and the ranch had a cash crop. My uncles owned grape ranches. I believe most of our AG, we can be proud of. I think we were perfect, we may be a little less than that today. I've worked on dairies, never saw an inspection. We had a slaughter house I saw an inspection or two over the years.
I still think we're the best! But

There are videos of dairymen, and their handling of their animals, on youtube that would make both you and I sick.

Never?????? USDA inspectors don't, not enough money. large, commercial dairies have their own vets.

All slaughter plants have posted dates and results posted for all to see.

Maybe it's different there?

Your mention of all the health problems, I think that is less than true, I think this, RE: Fresh raw milk taboo has been no more than part of, became a stronger government push after WWII, the intent to end people growing, raising their own food. I don't know if an industry called on the government to do this or if some C students fresh from college in Big ,Government,decided to do it.

Yes, we want clean food animals, we have that, milk unlike lobster, if not fresh or clean, can be found by tasting unless it is pasteurized, then it like any other form of milk can be contaminated.

people today get food poising every day in our country thinking they have the flu. This happens when they go out to eat or from what they buy at the store and prepare at home. Only when several get sick quickly and die or nearly die, is it pegged to a restaurant or supermarket is it touted as contaminated food.

People have their animals tested, we do, and small farms have less chance of infestation, you must know that.

Fresh Raw Milk is as safe as fresh eggs or corn.

Milk is as good as it can be fresh and raw. I don't mind if a company wants to boil or dry it for ultra long or cold storage.

Millk is best and safe as it was intended. Government be darned.

Oh, I see what you mean by inspection, self regulation. Yes, we have a vet too. We found a intact bull calf from a good line in Arizona, got a brand inspection there and had our vet check him here, found a heifer in Oregon and did the same.
All ranches have a vet but most give their own shots and treatments and watch what is injected into or fed to their animals.

I think were saying about the same thing. I like our farmers, I like our ranchers and I like our dairy industry. I don't like synthetic hormones and teaching people clean fresh milk is bad and must be boiled or handled by a large company to be safe.

Richard, you obviously weren't alive during 50's and 60's when most of these health laws were started-clamored for by consumer groups because of lack of safety issues--still are in areas.

Food poisoning can't be tasted always. The taste test is a poor (dangerous) test.

No, large commercial dairies, swine feeders, poultry units, etc have vets on staff with trained personnel. Plus all management people tend to be specialists with that livestock. They undergo intense training constantly.

No problem with farm to market but why can't they sell their items without making false claims. Want free range chickens, beef, etc, buy it. Should pay extra for extra costs, management.
