It's really quite interesting to go horse riding in the Teton Mountains with one dad who is a cowboy/mountain man and has lived in said mountains his entire life, and the other dad who is a mining engineer.
Not only do you learn about the animals that live there, the indians who used to live...
The leaves on the edges have taken on this pinkish brown color but arent withering or falling off... I haven't changes a single thing in the way I care for this plant in over a year and its suddenly making a stink about something...
So apparently Minnesota is under moderate drought conditions. We've been learning how to water our garden but I've lost peas, beans, and squash because of not knowing how to water because MN is usually so wet. It seems that my eggplant and peppers are thriving right now though. My fish...
I've never had issues with blossom end rot and this year I've got 2 plants with BER. I dont have a bunch of egg shells so what is the quickest way to get them some calcium?
OK so our county fair start up Mid-June and run thru mid-August. Unfortunately in this rotation of county fairs, the counties closest to me are always first... I want to know what I am supposed to do in Northern MN to have ripe tomatoes ready to enter in the fair by June 30th??? Usually we...
... I am loathe to put anything besides rain and air on my garden...
Oh and some epsom salts.
So, my little wheelbarrow salad bed is about to really kick into production, and I don't want a repeat of the total loss we had last year to the dang white butterflies of death.
I'm thinking of...
I started hardening off my tomato seedlings Friday, and spent all weekend taking them in and out. Last night was their first night outside and they looked GREAT this morning! If its not raining tonight I'll plant them when I get home.
Yesterday I put in:
Alaska Peas - 3 12' rows
Green...
This tree is in our pasture. It is my favorite tree, as well as DH's. He likes it so much that he had someone from the extension office come identify it once years ago.
They told him it was a river elm. I have looked up river elms and they look nothing like this tree.
It died last spring...
Hey,
So, last year was my first attempt at making dill pickles at home. My mom canned and jellied EVERYTHING, but she never made pickles, so I just avoided them out of "tradition", and because my cucumbers never grew.
Last year I decided to go overbaord with my planting, in the hopes of...
I am wondering if I can really get any valuable use out of cold frames here in Northern MN? With normal winter arriving at the end of October and lasting till mid-April, would I be able to put plants out in the cold frame if there is snow around it and get anything accomplished?
I've tried starting basil from seed twice now, using seeds from 2 different companies, and it doesnt grow.
Since the seed is so tiny I just barely cover them with soil, I don't keep the dirt soaked, but it's never bone dry either, it gets watered about once every 3 days. It's in a clay pot that...
Hey! OK so my new obsession is rosemary. I'm decently sure that I can't just grow it in the ground here, due to the harsh winters. So, how big a container should I use, and would it be ok to store it in the insulated garage in the winter for a "dormant" period? I have many steps into my...
OK, so I've tried growing watermelon for 3 years in a row and each year its a huge fail. I get the ones that don't need such a long season to mature, I plant them in full sun, lord knows they get plenty of water, but every year my vines are spindly and short, and the fruits that actually set...
My vines weren't ready to die down yet, but we got a hard frost and they did die. I know ideally squash should be picked after the vine dies and is brown.
My vines are green mush.
If I pick my squash will it keep as it should or will it spoil from not being "done" yet?
I caught a flock of those darned white butterflies laying eggs on my baby salad greens yesterday. So now that they are covered in eggs, what can I do to prevent the eggs from hatching?
