Incredible winds here today as well. Bad luck too because yesterday was recycling day, and everyone on the street has at least two bins to be collected. Unfortunately there was glare ice everywhere and all the large trucks had to be taken off the road, so no collection. We thought they'd come today so we all left the bins at the curb; when the winds arrived there was a garbage storm of pop cans, wrappers, food containers and plastic water jugs absolutely everywhere.

this time the winds mostly went north of us so the power company is working hard to restore power. i checked on the status of the power company in the UP of MI just because i was curious and they've got fewer people without power up there than those in the upper part of lower MI.

as for recycling, they tell us here that if the wind is bad to just wait until next time because it can get blown around, we only have smaller bins without covers and they can get knocked over by heavy winds. i sure don't like having to fish all that out of the ditch either so to me it was always common sense. it's clean stuff and it doesn't smell to hold it for another week.

@Carol Dee i sure hope the fence didn't mess up your siding!

Snow on the ground, a very light-weight 2", and 11°f (-12C) with maybe a few more degrees of warmth to lose by sunrise ...

Yesterday, I didn't anticipate that the light snow would continue as many hours as it fell. Out with the broom and shovel AM and PM. It doesn't help traction on the sidewalk to have people traffic all over it but some of that can't be helped. I don't like using rock salt on it and being a little conscientious helps. The salt is likely one of the reasons that the Hell Strip grass has so much trouble competing with the weeds. Really, really don't know what should be done with that ground between sidewalk and road!

There will be a few afternoons with thawing, we are told, not today. Local news seems to be 100% traffic accidents.

That surprised me. Down here 1" of snow would shut everything down. We just can't handle it, physically or mentally. Where you are I would have expected you to not even notice a 2" snow as far as traffic accidents in the news.

It's the cold and "newness" that came with the snow, @Ridgerunner . We have had so little precipitation of any sort over the last 9 months. The pavement is well below freezing from the start and this little bit of snow promptly turned to ice.

Two 18 wheelers jackknifed on the interstate and closed the highway. Steep hills are impossible.

Combine that with the crazy speeds people are willing to drive! Speed limits are treated as minimums. Traffic moves 10 mph faster than what is posted. Driving fast must be seen as high driver performance. Combine that with frequent glances at the cell phone and one is really top of the class.

Under any circumstances, however, the afternoon commute yesterday must have been outrageous!

IT seems around here that people forget how to drive in snow. Ice etc. between winters. Accidents like crazy r=the 1st winter weather event!

I know around here the hazard isn’t really the snow so much as the people that don’t know how to drive in it. Technically we could probably get places just fine but it’s not worth the risk of getting hit by an idiot who insists on going 50mph on the backroads in the snow.

I grew up in the ridges of East Tennessee. We had snow when I was driving in winter. I've lived and worked in snowy places. I feel in many conditions I could get where I need to go pretty well using snow driving techniques, but it's the other drivers that keep me off of the roads unless I absolutely have to go.

I'll remember some of these comments this winter when yankees are laughing about southern cities shutting down due to a little snow and bragging how they drive through a few feet of snow. :hide

i'm the same way, have done it for many hours at a stretch, but prefer to stay home if i can. luckily that is not an issue very often here. we don't really need to be someplace at specific times very often.

This isn't quite weather news. I'll say, it's weather-related :).

The length of winter shadows: The teevee weather person said that today was supposed to have "freezing fog." Maybe later in the day and it's beginning to be a little overcast but still sunny.

A shadow just before 1 December of something just over 72" was 205" long. Today, it's 209" long. I'll try to remember that if it's a sunny day at "high noon" on the Solstice to measure again ;).
