Can you grow garlic from scapes?

Seems like a simple question right? Most people plant a garlic clove to get a bulb of garlic. But I had a friend give me a bunch of scapes. Could I separate the little cloves and plant them to get garlic?

    Super cool Frog

Found this frog in our garden during vacation. He was pretty big. About 3.5 to 4 inches long. And he was sooooo beautiful. The brown spots were actually copper color and shimmered in the sun. I later saw some others that were the same, but smaller. I thought he was too cool not to take a...

I am becoming a food snob!

And I think I'm ok with that! There are so many things that I used to eat and enjoy that were pre-packaged, pre-made, etc that I just don't like anymore now that we raise our own food and I make quite a bit from scratch. It's not that I don't want to like them. In fact, when I eat them...

Lower leaves yellow on newly planted tomatoes

I planted our tomato plants about a week and a half ago. They all looked good. The last two days I have noticed the lower branches and leave yellowing. It seriously has done nothing but rain for the last 2 weeks. Could this be the culprit? I was going to take those branches off. Should I...

Any fiber (like spinning) people here?

I have two LGD's and have just found out that people actually purchase their winter undercoats to spin into yarn or do "felting" with. I really don't know a thing about either one. All I know is they have fur that looks like wool. Just looking to get some more knowledge on the subject...

I was bummed but, think I figured out the problem.

We have 5 broody hens right now. This year I am just letting them do their thing. I have interfeared in the past and the results weren't good: abandoning nest, killing chicks, etc. Over the past few days, we have found 3 fully developed chicks at different times dead on the coop floor. 1...

What do you like best about the region that you live in?

I was out working in the garden last night thinking about a comment I had made that if the farmer and I ever visited the North West, we most likely would call home and tell someone to pack up our things and put the house on the market. To us, the North West sounds very appealing and the...

    Bull calf - video

OK, technically, this animal isn't gardening. But he does work at my manure manufacturing plant which does support my garden. I put this video on backyardherds too but didn't know who is over there and who is not. He was just having so much fun I had to share...

    Crazy Broody Hen

I have one hen sitting in a nesting box with several eggs tucked under. You know...safely 2 ft off the ground, walls on 3 sides. AND THEN.... I have this hen. Sitting on an 8 x8, six feet up in the air with no sides anywhere. :th Crazy bird!

    FREE Food for your chickens

For the last two weeks, every time I go into the supermarket (which may be 2 to 3 times a week) I ask the produce people if I can have the bag of corn husks that everyone throws away. Around here, they have a big bucket near the corn on the cob and many people shuck it before they take it home...

Here comes the sun. And the moon?

This morning when I woke, I looked out the doors in the bedroom. The moon was a beautiful 1/2 moon. (Sorry for the picture quality.) Then, I went down stairs to get the camera and saw this beautiful sunrise! How amazing is that? The sun and moon both showing at the same time...

    Dried up asparagus roots

Is this how they come? I just went to the local Blue Seal to get some cow grain and noticed that they had these bunches of things that looked like very thin roots, with a shriveled up little bulb looking thing on the end. All brown and dry. Said it was asparagus. Is this really what they...

Can you winter over raspberries and strawberries in a pot?

My daughter is near San Fransisco, Ca. She can't plant in the ground as they rent. But she is wondering if she can just keep the plants in the containers over the winter. I can't really help her as our climate is so different. Do any of you have expertise in this area? Thanks a bunch!

    Our Monday project

These animals don't really help with the garden, but I wanted to share and don't like the new format (well old now) on BYC. So I'll just share with you all. Before: Turkey shanty After: Turky sanctuary They will be much happier now with roosting poles. All we have left to do is put...

I was hoping for a late season crop

I thought I would try this year to do some rotation planting. I got a second small crop of radishes in that are doing ok along with a 2nd small crop of green bush beans that are loaded with flowers so hopefully this will be a winner. I also planted some more kale and some beets. The beets...
