Blue Jay's 2022 Bean Show - Day 1

#15-Sux-YeE-7 - Bush Dry - 2022 Grow Out

One of the many Robert Lobitz legacy beans that I have acquired from a former member of Seed Savers Exchange Ron Thuma who acquired the original samples from Roberts brother James in 2008. After a few years of grow outs Ron said he was frustrated with these grow outs and sent me Robert Lobitz's beans that he had not established as stable or named. Sadly within a few years Ron began having severe memory problems and passed away two years ago.

This bean now as far as I can tell is stable and I need to give it a name. It is the seventh segregation of Robert's code Sux-YeE-C-97A. I have changed the code numbers slightly to keep track of the beans and segregations.

The first photo is of the sample I had originally received in 2015. Photo number two is how this seventh segregation now appears. The beans are small close to the size of a snap bean with a brown soldier or bird figure around the eye and very productive. 10 to 11 plants produced 17.1 ounces (484.7768 gm)

#15-Sux-YeE-5.1 - Bush Dry - 2022 Grow Out

This bean is still not stable and is related to the #15-Sux-YeE group. I got interested in this bean when I first saw it as it's similar to one of my original beans Pawnee but the seed is smaller. It's seed coat color and pattern also don't seem to be affected by growing in different soils. The first photo is of the main segregation and then this bean produces two other segregations (Photos 2 and three) so far each year that it is grown. Total seed production with all segregations added. 10 or 11 plants 13.70 ounces (371.378 gm).

African Cave - Bush Dry - 2022 Grow Out

Last grown in 2016. The bean was grown in different soil this year in the east raised bed at Bean Acres behind my deer fence. It didn't seem to be as productive this past summer. Sent to me by Stephen Smith of Guthrie Kentucky in 2015. Stephen was for a couple of years manager of William Woys Weaver's Roughwood Seed Collection in Devon, Pennsylvania. Total Seed production with 10 or 11 plants 6.45 ounces (182.85 gm)

African Premier Segregation 4 - Bush Dry - 2022

This bean did not throw off any segregations this year but the seed color seemed to be lighter in tone. It was grown again at Bean Acres in the west bed which has a different soil than the east bed. Related to African Premier. I discovered this cross in 2014. Has nearly the same coloring and markings as African Premier but has a longer more kidney shaped seed. First photo is 2021's grow out of this bean and second photo in this summer's grow out. Total seed production with 10 or 11 plants. 17.35 ounces (491.86 gm)

Andromeda - Pole Lima - 2022 Grow Out

From an cross with Ping Zebra discovered in 2017. This cross produced several Ping Zebra sized limas of various colors in 2020. Naming this particular segregation as Andromeda in 2021. This bean was grown in isolation this year and did not produce any off types. This bean might already be stable. The beautiful beans creates a strong Wow reaction in the viewer when seen for the very first time. Total amound of seed produced with 14 plants was 31.20 ounces (884.50 gm)

Bamberger Blaue - Bush Dry - 2022 Grow Out

Added to my collection in 2013 from Astrid Storm in Germany. This year was my third time growing the bean. The bean was discovered in Bavarian farmers market in 1980. This years grow produced one off type shown in photo #2. The one single off type plant was much larger than the mother varieties plants. Seed production with 10 or 11 plants produced 6.75 ounces of beans (191.35 gm)

Billingsgate Segregation #3 - Bush - 2022 Grow Out

An off type bean was discovered in Magpie in 2013 and named Billingsgate. Upon growing Billingsgate in 2014 four segregations were found and this one is the third. This year was the third grow out of this bean and two off types were shown in photos #2 and #3. The segregation #3 is a pattern and color I find fairly frequently when finding off types in other bean varieties. Small slender white bean with a figure around the eye. All the seeds of these beans are small and slender about the size of slender snap bean seed. Seed production with 10 or 11 plants produced 5.70 ounces (161.59 gm)

Billingsgate Segregation #4 - Bush - 2022 Grow Out

This segregation was also discovered in the Billingsgate Magpie off type in 2014. This year was the fourth grow out of this bean and three off types were found shown in photos #2, #3, and #4. All the seeds of these beans are small and slender about the size of slender snap bean seed. Seed production with 10 or 11 plants produced 5.15 ounces (146 gm)
