We didn't have the below-zero weather last week, surprising the meteorologists (& me). They had said that it would have been the first time since March 2019 for the thermometer to drop below 0°f (-18° C).

The wind chill was subzero several times and at quite a long stretch where there was much exposure (no close mountains to the north). That, of course, makes life difficult for living creatures.

It has been quite cloudy and that accounts for the warmer-than-expected but now, we will have more snow. It doesn't look like there is any chance of avoiding it ;). It will add to the local snow cover that has been on everything horizontal since December 16. There is way over 6' of snow on the pass through the Cascades and i90 was closed for quite some time last week; here they go again!

Got in the car this morning and was surprised by the sudden sensation of very frozen metal, and that my car hesitated to turn over. Haven't checked the weather in awhile, so came in and checked the official temps.

It was -30 C/-20 F with the windchill! Darn cold. I drove around for a bit to warm the car up, with wheels that felt like rocks, and saw a man with a mustache and beard walking his dog - his whole beard and 'stache were covered in white ice. Amazingly, his short haired dog was not walking on 3 legs, like mine does in weather like this. 🥶

And now we are without power, expecting snow and maybe ice. Hard to believe it has been so warm.

It is times like these that I enjoy lulling my wife to sleep with stories of how I spent the summer figuring out how to power the house with our new generator. She is very appreciative. She makes cute noises every time I start telling the story over again. (joke!)

It’s officially a winter wonderland outside right now. The weather people have been claiming it wouldn’t stick. Ha! The trees and deck and roof have about half and inch and there’s just enough on the yard to turn it white. First measurable snow here in 4 years. It will probably be gone by lunch but that’s probably for the best.
Can’t believe it was almost 80 Saturday.

Most of it melted overnight but we still have about an inch left in spots in the yard and on the decks and other raised surfaces. We had almost two inches when I went to bed at two last night.

The thermometer is busted fyi. It’s actually closer to 30 out. Just realized that.

Short-term snow is pretty. Up here, it looks like our thaws are over for awhile, and Winter is finally settling in. It's only 18 F. degrees as I type this, and several nights below 0 F. are in the forecast. Fortunately not much in the way of snow (yet), they've actually had more snow South of us.
