    Weed ident..

Cooking destroys the stinging compound. I drink nettle tea lots. It does not grow in my garden, and I am wary of planting this bane of childhood. So I buy a weed.

    Dreaded cucumber beetle question.

It's war this year, last year I lost all vine crops. Everything in the book. On the plus side, the kudzu stink bugs were fewer last year, after swarming everything the year before. Baymule, I just googled your bug and we don't have it.

What do you buy starts of?

If there's basil 'African Blue', I will get that and take lots of cuttings. It's very ornamental and tough. If the sweet potatoes don't slip in time, I'll have to buy those. I have enthusiastic, or delusional, plans for seed starts this year. Lots of things follow me home.

    Tips for cleaning windows

Peanut butter removes jar label glues very well, perhaps it'll help? If your window has some sort of low-e coating, has it been fogged by harsh cleaners?

Split Leafed Philodendron - Moving inside to office

Split leaf philodendron, Monstera deliciosa, has a fruit said to be quite edible. The Athens, Ga. State botanical garden had one reaching twenty feet along with fruit visible some years ago in their conservatory. Has anyone here ever tasted it?

    newbie from Georgia

Hi, everyone! I'm from NE Atlanta suburbs...way outside the perimeter. Dandelionchick, can you describe how you fasten the plastic sheeting to the welded wire fencing used to make your low tunnels? We have such swings in temperatures every winter I am constantly moving the plastic on and off...

    Butternut Squash Rant

Thank you for the growing tips for next year. My biggest question is why the butternut bought at the grocery lately are so awful? Watery, stringy, lacking true butternut flavor. Is this some new hybrid? I want to avoid that in my purchases this year and planting next year

    Butternut Squash Rant

Due to my losing the battle the last three years to bugs, I have shamefully resorted to purchasing butternut squash AT THE GROCERY STORE (insert shameful smilie) at outrageous prices. The last few have the taste and texture of coarsest bred jack o lantern pumpkins! What happened? I can't...

Trying to find that secret ingredient in Chili

There's a version I make that I don't even know qualifies as chili. Chicken leg quarters come cheap in these 10 pound bags. After cutting off and freezing all the drumsticks, I skin and cut off the fat for chicken cracklings and rendered chicken fat. The thighs go to make a big pot of stock...

What Did You Do In Your Garden Today?

Little Miss Insomniac here, good morning all. Love the garden photos. Yesterday I brought in the sorghum seed heads from the shed. I just grew a small bit for testing and seed, the canes are very sweet. I'd love to show off photos but my brain is too scrambled to figure it out this time...

black lab farm fall garden happenings heavy pic

Jared77, I think you're great. Thank you for the smile this am! Raspberry pruning, another thing to look up...got the assorted pack and made a 50 foot row, but can't remember what they are...I wrote it down someplace. What's the worst that can happen if I don't prune anything but dead wood?

Um, sorry to break this to you, but IMHO you are a tad optimistic there with the timeline.

    Tree Frog

Tree frogs are loud and nocturnal. Check your drains, showers, house plants. At least that's where I have found them after a few weird nights. If you have cats, pay attention to where cat is staring.

    Mountain Ash Canker?

Ok, I've also googled ash canker images. Your photo hasn't enough resolution to see other bark details of ash borer diseases, fugal cankers, etc, so take a look online and see if anything looks like it other than something scraping it. I could be completely off by lots. Yikes, there are more...

    Mountain Ash Canker?

Thanks. I zoomed in as much as it allowed. Looks like some mechanical injury, not a disease. Watch for secondary infections of pests, such as borers. Kept healthy, it may recover fully.

    Mountain Ash Canker?

If that area of dead bark faces south or south east, then it might be sun scald. Happens to newly planted or young trees when their tender, un acclimatized bark is subjected to localized freeze thaw cycles in winter, due to the bark warming by the sun. Prevention is trunk wraps for the first...

    Naps.

Got rear ended while stopped at a red light. My truck is totaled. It's complicated by the fact I've had several concussions earlier in life. I was about that age when I had a bad one that I remember puking for two weeks solid and missed a lot of school. I am grumpy, painful and down this am...

    Naps.

I am napping a lot right now, due to a concussion. Hating that the weather is soooo grand and I am so useless! I sat on the ground and got one garlic head of cloves planted before the sunshine drilled my brain. Aargh!
