Best place to get sunflower seeds?

I really like them and my DS who was 2 1/2 last year when I got him into them loved how the birds visited his garden in the fall. He calls them sunny flowers and remembered them this year when I started to look at seed catalogs. He wanted ones that were different from the yellows he grew last...

Best place to get sunflower seeds?

My DS loved planting his sunflower bed last year and would like to do it again, but wants more of a variety. Is there any really great place to get seeds from? Thanks for the help. :)

Not a good year for vegetable gardening

I'm right there with ya. Last night we got a deluge and hail along with it. Just to the south of me in New Jersey they got 6 inches of hail!!! They were actually shovelling their driveway. :ep I'm lucky we only got a little pea sized hail. It has rained most of June to the point that my backyard...

    Gardengirl- watermelons??

I haven't seen anything bigger than a sprout here or there, but I just planted last week and then the rain happened. I hope I didn't lose them in the ground due to too much water. I had that happen to the peppers and some of the acorn squash. I have to start from scratch on those. I chose the...

    New to herb gowing--help

I hope you don't mind me piggybacking my herb question on your post Tobyshuman, but I didn't want to start a new thread for the same basic question. I am growing French Tarragon and parsley as well as Dill and Basil. Can the Tarragon and Parsley be picked in the same manner as the other 2? I...

A few garden pictures (plus an extra or ten)

Texan, what a beautiful garden! I'm so jelous. We are so behind here in the NorthEast. Rain, rain and more rain. I'm gonna build an ark soon. The plants can't just get a break to sun themselves and dry out! That field is gonna be great!! I love your chickies and pup. What a nice find in him...

Will squash cross polunate with other squash?

As I understand it a volunteer is a plant that appears somewhere you didn't plant it and is usually a variety you planted in that spot the year before. I hear of volunteers most commonly showing up in compost piles because that is where the scraps from the garden go.

Tell/show me your favorite shade plants!

Nice planter. :thumbsup I may have to steal the idea and tell my DH to bring home some pallets. :P As for shade plants, try looking into Astillbe and Corra Bells (or Corral, can't remember). The Astillbe are fern like with pretty flower spikes that look like fairy dust. They dry nicely on the...

    maturity question

You know, I never really gave time to maturity too much thought because I figured when they are ready, they are ready. I worry about last frost dates. ;) But this year is the first year with pumpkins and to be honest it is for my 3 yo who asked if we could plant them after travelling to the...

You HAVE to LOOK at this! Amazing!

We have the spring peepers here, drives my DH to maddness with the spring mating singing.) They come I guess because of the pool. We open the pool and a few hang around our deck, but this year I am putting a few frog houses in my garden to try to keep the bugs down that way. I hate to use...

    maturity question

I was wondering what it means when the seed company tells you __ days to maturity? For example, I bought small pumpkins for my DS and they are supposed to mature in 90 - 110 days. Is that from the time you put them in the ground, from the time they sprout, or from the time they flower? I am...

    Need help with Pea dilema

That's what I was thinking. I would hold half for the fall planting to try to salvage atleast part of the season. It has been a miserable spring here and I was kinda afraid of the seeds just rotting in the ground anyway. I just didn't want to lose another week while we were away, but if it was...

    Need help with Pea dilema

I was wondering when it is considered too late to plant garden peas and snap peas for the spring. I live in zone 5A and normally have the seeds in the ground last week in March/1st week in April. This year, we didn't get the garden tilled until recently because of all the rain/work and I was...
