    Too Late to Plant Beans?

Is it too late to plant beans in the more northern areas of the US (Midwest)? Just planted about another half pound of seed and I'm wondering if they're going to make it to produce dry seed.

    Back in Buisness (Beansness?)

Finally managed to get back into gardening with nearly 100 bean plants in the ground. Topcrop and some mixed beans from Sea K. Hoping to acquire some more bush bean diversity here soon in the hopes of starting a landrace. My new hometown has a seed library so I'll probably check that out...

Help Picking out Trees, Short Notice!

Do you remember how our generous neighbors gave me that acre of land to plant? (Btw, might actually be able to plant this year after all!) Well, he wants to line his driveway (It's stinkin' looooong!) with evergreen trees. He's thinking shorter, maybe dwarf almost, evergreens. Any...

    Lettuce Seed Germination

Lettuce used to be one of the easiest things that I could start from seed, but for the past three years I couldn't get anything. I don't think that I've done anything that could affect the germination. I just sow the seed over open ground. Should I try starting them in a seed flat? Suggestions?

    Ice, Ice Maybe! (No, Definitely!)

Alternative title - "All that glitters is not gold." I figured that since there were already winter pics being posted, that I might as well post mine. Potbelly pig, right side last pic. Well, you get the idea. Just about everything has been covered in a thick layer of ice for the last...

    Storing Apple and Pear Seeds

I keep getting this horrible feeling that I'm wasting something each time I throw an apple or pear core away. Can the seeds be stored dry or do they absolutely need to be kept moist? I'm aware that they'll need a cold period to germinate and that they won't be true-to-type.

Drilling Holes in Seeds 4 Beads

How would you go about drilling holes in seeds for use as beads? In particular tiny ones, like cowpeas. I've tried using a tiny needle but each and every time the seed just splits in half. I've manged to turn some Lettered Olive shells that I found in Florida a decade ago into beads, but not...

Using Pictures from the Internet as Avatars?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this... Is there a way to use pics from the internet as avatars? I found this awesome bird picture that I would like to use as my avatar. The picture has no watermark, so I figure that it should be fair game. Thanks. :)

    I Just Couldn't Help Myself...

Got a little bit planting-crazy so went ahead and winter-sowed quite a lot this morning. Among what I planted were mixed poppies (included the Black Swan poppies from @journey11 - thanks! and the Ziar Breadseed poppies from @sea-kangaroo - thanks!) carrots were planted (included carrots from...

    Nasturtiums!

Thought that I should get a lot of suggestions for this, with all of the flower people on here. Looking into some for this upcoming growing season, I really like the looks and would like to attract some more pollinators or at least keep them around for longer. I also read that they deter some...

    Good Companion Plants for Squashes/Cukes?

What are some good companion plants for squashes or cucumbers that will help fend off pests like cucumber beetles and squash bugs? Even if they've never been proven to due so? (Looked for that "Carrots Love Tomatoes book, but the library didn't have it.) I'm creating a plan for that extra acre...

    Osage Orange/ Carpathian Walnut Germ.

Pa brought home a whole wagon-load of Osage Orange fruits yesterday that he had gotten from a clients house. Upon closer inspection (and asking my dad) there is also a layer of Carpathian Walnuts underneath the Osages. Being the gardener of the family, my first thought when seeing both the...

    Just Showing Off... (Ducks)

Just wanted to show some of the new duck breeds that we've recently managed to get our hands on. Welsh Harlequin. Just got them from a Craigslist purchase. (Male with green head, three females, and apparently a transvestite duck to the far right that is barely even in the picture.) Saxony...

    New Garden Area Dilemma

I managed to get an acre or two of land to use from a neighbor - for free, she just wants part of my crop if she sees anything good. (Should I get this in paper? My dad thinks so.) The area's an old, abandoned field full of very tall grass and other weeds - too tall to mow over. The new...

    Ways to Eat Eggplant

Just got two of these from my Uncle and don't have the slightest idea of what to do with them - they're the medium-sized standard types that you could easily find at the grocery store. Stir-fry? Bake? Grill? How do you use these? And eggplants are good when they are glossy and black, right? Is...

Smoked! What Not to Put in a Fire

I had no idea where this should've went, so I just went ahead and put it in the "Everything Else Garden." With wood-chopping season here and the garden nearly cleared out I figured that starting a fire or two in the garden might not be a bad idea - maybe kill some of those weed seeds and add...

    Pickle Power

This is what my mom did today, as you might be able to imagine she wasn't too happy. ;) Thirty quarts of pickles and still more to pick. Both dill pickles (top pic, left) and bread and butter pickles (top pic, right) were made. The sunflowers are from the garden too. Before the cucumbers...
