    Soil testing

I started my master gardener classes last week and I am loving them! The assignment for this week was to bring in soil and water samples to test in class. I brought samples from all 3 of my gardens plus from around the fruit trees I planted last year. EEEKKKK! i don't have a bit of soil on this...

    Ball canning jars

Did anyone else get an e mail survey from Ball about the new lids and rings they are making? They are making brushed silver instead of gold to make them look like the old zinc lids. One of the survey questions was about whether or not you would get rid of all your gold rins and buy new silver...

    A case of mistaken identity

Yesterday was my GD's birthday party. She is 9 and loves to help me in the garden. Her Uncle got her a whole set of kid sized gardening tools with a carrying case, gloves, trowel, etc. It's better than mine! When he handed her the shovel and rake that were just tied together with rafia she gave...

Well it seems I waited too long and I can't find blue or red potatoes any place now. Not a major disaster but the GD will be disappointed. Next year I'll know better. :(

    Bue bird boxes

I guess this is kind of garden related since we probably all like to have beautiful birds around our gardens. I wanted to get some blue bird boxes so I was searching on line and I found out that our Game Commission sells them at their nursery for $7. I couldn't believe it so I called and that is...

    Our science experiment

My husband decide last fall that he wanted to bring one of the pepper plants from the garden into the house. He dug it out right when they called for the first frost and put it in a pot. 1st time in garden this year

I am PSYCHED now! I just spent 45 min. in my garden with the fork and the ground is perfect. Darn! It's too early to really plant anything here yet. I had dumped some manure/chips on the garden back in the late fall and I thought maybe I could get it turned in to the soil just for an excuse to...

    growing heirloom veggies

I am fairly new to heirloom veggies. I would like to plant more this year but I have a question. Since they are open pollinating do you only plant 1 heirloom variety of each vegetable to prevent cross pollination? How far apart would I have to plant 2 different heirloom tomatoes to prevent...

    puny onions

I dug my onions on Saturday and was very disappointed. :( I only got about 5 lbs of onions and the biggest ones are only about 2 inches across. Most are smaller. finding or making good soil

I was reading a thread on here that related to sq. foot gardening and Mel's mix. Some people were having a problem finding vermiculite and peat. This may not be an answer for everyone but it works great for me....We have a small/med. green house very near us and we know the owners. At the end of...
