they can take frosts and light freezes. Youve got until the date of your first hard freeze, but you need to know how long it will take them to mature. 50 days?
Most of the farm and ranch supply stores will still have seed, sometimes that just keep it in the back so they can display seasonal...
I like tart and acidic tomatoes. The more tangy the better. I don't like "Brandywine" at all. Sweet and bland. Yuck! "Beefstake and Better Boy" are my favorites.
I used to sweat the small stuff really bad! I think that little book really helped to improve my life. I must have read it at least three times. I think i gave it away to a fellow worry wort.
It depends on the variety. Some turn brown, others are green with a pink blush. Your best bet is to squeeze them. They should be soft and somewhat mushy, not firm. They should pull away from the plant easily. Taste one. It should be sweet, not bland. If it is still firm and not sweet, it is not...
"Roma" is the classic open pollinated paste tomato, and one of my favs for tacos and salads as well. It is an heirloom variety that you can use to make your own tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, and save your own seeds for next season.
We have a bean rust here that has done the same thing, looks similar to what you have. Also, heat and drought can kill bean plants and looks similar. I'm not a bean expert, but i don't know any organic cure for this condition, so i always just pull mine up at that point and plant fall greens in...
If you plant a blackberry or raspberry that has some one year old wood from an old cane, it can grow new growth from that wood that will fruit. Ever-bearing raspberries will also fruit on new wood. Blackberries do not normally fruit on new wood, but i have seen it happen.
Get a real cat, feed her in the garden and keep fresh water for her out there. It works for me. About once per hour, she will go out there to snack.
I eat a great deal of dandelion and purselane, and even cultivate them in the garden. One or both go into every salad. But my favorite wild edible plants are steamed tips of greenbriar, and passion fruit (maypops). Greenbriar tips have a flavor and texture similar to asparagus. Maypops can only...
I have about 1/4 acre planted in permaculture beds with an over story of fruit and nut trees. The other 3/4 acre is heavily wooded. The house is to the side, with the garden rooms to the north, east, and south. The entire western side of the property is the woods. Here's a shot of my solar...
cityfarmer, scab is just ugly bumps and black spots all over your potatoes, but if you like pretty little red new potatoes with your green beans, you'll have to peel them. I've also gotten scab so bad that it was more like black cavities the size of a quarter. And the yield will be greatly...
Yep. Blight. That sucks. Yank em an burn em. Hope the rest of them do better. Sorry for your loss. I was fortunate that only one of mine had the blight this year.
