Got some more things in the ground!

I process my own chickens, too. But I'm real impressed with you who process your pigs. I just bought a baby pig that I'm raising for slaughter in November. I'll be taking her to the butcher. Her name is Bacon. :D

    Kentucky Gardeners

:frow I'm in South Central KY -Metcalfe County. This will be my second year with a full garden (70x50'). Last year was such a hit that I'm doing it again. We have to surround our garden with electric netting due to the rabbit population. This will be my first year planting pickling cucumbers...

What have you canned or preserved today?

FIRST TIME canner here. I figured I'd try my hand at canning tomatoes. I was able to can 4 qt-sized jars of tomatoes that I cut up into quarters. I probably could have packed the tomatoes in the jars better because it seems to be a whole lotta extra room now that they're sealed. Anyway, it was...

    Dying Tomato Plants Just Arrived

The company said they won't have any more Green Zebra tomatoes till NEXT YEAR, so I'm stuck with these. The company did provide a refund, however. I had never tried the Green Zebra before, so I was really looking forward to it. I had already put the plant food in the water, but I'll keep...

    Dying Tomato Plants Just Arrived

Thank you. I watered them with some plant food figuring that might help (I don't know). The soil was so hard the water just ran off the top, so I am watering from the bottom. They are sitting underneath my grow lamp in the house. Hopefully, they'll perk up. It's the ONLY green variety we'll...

    Dying Tomato Plants Just Arrived

I ordered some Green Zebra tomato plants a few weeks ago and they just arrived today via US mail (a week in transit). They look like they're giving up on living. The leaves are crispy and brittle. Is it at all possible to revive them??? (The plants actually look better in the photo.)

    Cilantro-Any tips for successful growth?

I grew cilantro in my garden last season and it didn't do well at all. It was small with not very many leaves, then it bolted. This year I'm buying cilantro seeds and will plant them in large pots on my patio to see if it makes a difference. I think by them being closer to me (my patio), I'll...

    Mother Earth News Garden Planner

:D Yeah, right now (winter) the online garden planner is a lot of fun - I've got nothing better to do. lol At the very least, it'll help me plot where plants will go and how far and how much space to calculate; making that part of my job easier. (For a newbie, that's important.)...

    Mother Earth News Garden Planner

Thanx! I'm thinking this is gonna be fun. I understand about the setbacks and minor disappointments since I experienced those in my last garden (but not much). For me, when I walk outside to the site where I'm planting the majority of veggies, it just looks so overwhelming; but if I plan it...

    Mother Earth News Garden Planner

I am a NEWBIE to gardening and growing my own food. I first planted a garden last season (after attending an organic garden hand-on seminar at a local farm) and enjoyed it very much. I planted whatever was given to me at the seminar (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, romaine lettuce, onions, melons...

    All my chickens are gone

I like the radio idea. We also have 3 LGD's. They're only puppies right now, but will be good guardians once they're older! I hate losing livestock to predators. I'm so sorry for your loss.

    My chickens love zuchinni!

My hens eat up everything. They especially loved the cucumbers during the hot summer months. I would also give them the watermelon rinds that were leftover. Bananas are extremely high on their delicacy list! :)

Chickens or Rabbits. Which to raise and eat?

I have chickens for eggs and meat . . . also have some for the cuteness factor. ;) Thought about rabbits at one time, but decided against it since no one wanted to butcher a fuzzy wittle wabbit. :)
